2021-22 Year 6 Learning

Here, you will find out about all our magnificent learning and educational escapades that we encounter this year! 

There are also some handy documents for you to view to give you a little more detail on our termly and yearly plans.

Term 6

Year 6 did an AMAZING job completing their SATs last term, showing what they know and trying their very best. We were all very impressed and the children were proud of themselves!

Our topic for Term 5 called My Whitehall and has a PSHE focus. Children will be reflecting on their experiences from Reception to Year 6 and begin to look forward to their transition to secondary school. 

Maths learning will be be based on mathematical games that the children design and projects that help them to develop their groupwork skills at the same time.

Writing lessons will sometimes relate to project work, our topic learning and books that we read together in class. 

Year 6 children will also do some transition work with their secondary schools, to help them get ready for September! Our class novel is Wonder by R.J. Palacio; it's a great story and helps us to consider how we relate to people in a new school setting.

Week 3 of Term 6 will be Activity Week and will give children a wide range of experiences in and out of school.

Term 5

 Our topic for Term 5 is the Ancient Kingdom of Benin. We will focus on the years between 900-1600AD, in which we learn about how the kingdom was ruled, where it was, the art produced there and the trade links that were formed with countries like Portugal. 

We will be reading “Children of the Benin Kingdom” by Dinah Orji and basing some of our writing around this text.

In our writing lessons, we will be using the short animation "Rock, Paper, Scissors" as a stimulus for exciting story writing.

This term is also when children will sit their SATs test (from 9th May). We are blown away by how hard the children have worked to prepare themselves for these tests, and are really excited for them to show off all they have learnt - you will all do amazingly well! Good luck!

Term 4

'Journeys!! After learning about World War Two in Term 3, we found about different groups of people that came to Britain - especially Bristol - following the end of the the Second World War. We learnt about the Windrush Generation that arrived from the Caribbean, people who have arrived from other European countries, and groups that have arrived from different African countries - and we celebrated the fantastically diverse community we're part of locally and nationally. 

Our author of the term was Shaun Tan - an incredible author and illustrator whose books help us to consider the experiences of people who arrive in new lands and those who have seen new people arrive in their home countries.

Term 3

This term's topic learning was all about World War Two and life for children in Bristol at the time. Children learnt about the key events, including turning points, in World War Two to provide context for the rest of our learning. We also learnt about the Battle of Britain, D Day and the German invasion of Russia, and found out about a variety of experiences of evacuation, using a range of sources and accounts from Bristol evacuees to understand the diversity of these experiences.

Our writing and grammar this term was based around our World War Two learning, beginning by developing our persuasive writing skills, advertising our own gas masks designed for a pet and then attempting to persuade a loved one to send their children to the countryside as an evacuee. We learnt about 'timeslip' stories, which are not told in chronological order (flashing forwards/backwards in time).

As well as looking at some war poetry, we will read 'Letters from the Lighthouse' by Emma Carroll as a our class novel, and used this to help develop our fantastic reading comprehension skills.

Our maths learning focused on geometry (calculating missing angles using formulae) before moving on to fractions, decimals and percentages.

Have a look at some of the photos from our fantastic VE Day Party at the end of term. We made fruit flapjacks with Chef Glynn, and prepared jam, cheese and cucumber sandwiches to eat as well! 

Term 2

Our topic in Term 2 was 'Extreme Landscapes!' Our main focus was geography, where children learned about hot and cold climates, mountains and volcanoes. We practised our OS map reading skills, learnt about Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's ascent of Mount Everest and used our DT skills to design and make our own exploding volcanoes!

To support our learning, we visited a local climbing wall - our very own climbing expedition! Back in school, we used this experience to support our instruction writing skills as part of our English lessons. We wrote our own reports about mountain-dwelling animals, reading the short story 'Way Home' and continued our learning about Shakespeare's plays. Our end of the day class story was the exciting Philip Pullman story, 'Clockwork'.

Our maths learning focused on multiplication and division before moving onto geometry.

Term 1

The children have really enjoyed our topic of COASTS this term.  They have researched the ways in which coastlines are transformed by natural processes such as erosion and deposition.  We also learnt about coastal management and designed our own sea defences.  In Science children pieced together evidence from pre-historic fossils and followed Charles Darwin's voyage of discovery on the Beagle. They learnt about Mary Anning and the fossil discoveries that she made along the Lyme Regis - Charmouth coast. We had a a fantastic day in Charmouth fossil hunting with expert Ed Drewitt.  Children found ammonites, belemnites and there was even a discovery of an ichthyosaur tail vertebrae!  Have a look at some of our pictures:
